A brief write-up of Marié's show Monday night in Virginia, to give everyone who will see her in New York and elsewhere on her tour an idea of what to expect. (This info may have already been posted elsewhere, but I'm more comfortable with message boards than newfangled gizmos like Myspace, Facebook & Twitter.)

The show at Jammin' Java was advertised as standing room only, but they set up chairs instead (to my relief, at least). Alpha Rev opened the show with a five song set, albeit shorthanded, as their guitarist had a travel snafu and got stuck in Houston. Hopefully he can make it to Tuesday's New York show. Their sound, with vocal/keyboardist, violin(!), and cello(!!) was interesting.

Marié's 12-song set lasted about an hour. The set list was:

Daybreak (vocals only)
Stupid for You (keyboard)
Know You By Heart (acoustic guitar)
Sanctuary (acoustic guitar)
Breathing Underwater (vocals only)
Feel (keyboard)
Love with a Stranger (keyboard)
Unfold (acoustic guitar)
Dear Friend (keyboard) - part only
Avalanche (vocals only)
Say It Again (acoustic guitar)
Umbrella (acoustic guitar, w/o band) - encore

Dear Friend was an unplanned request from someone in the audience, who said they had posted the request on Marié's Facebook page. Marié said she hadn't practiced it, but played several verses anyway. That song is so popular - it really needs to be on her next album! She played Umbrella as an encore alone after her band (guitarist and keyboard/Macbook-ist) had already cleared off the stage. With Christmas coming up, I had hoped she would include Bring Me Love (my favorite); maybe later in the tour.

The acoustic version of Know You By Heart worked better than I expected. As Marié introduced the song, she joked that she was "YouTubing my own songs" on the tour, by stripping the more highly produced songs from Breathing Underwater to the acoustic essentials, like she does to other artists' songs on her YouTube videos. She also mentioned that Sanctuary was one of her favorite songs from the BU recording sessions and was disappointed that it didn't make the final cut to the main album.

Afterwards, Marié stayed around and did a meet'n'greet, signing autographs, taking pictures, and chatting with the fans in attendance.

Swag. There were two t-shirts on sale for $15 each - white with the album cover artwork on the front (not sure what's on the back), and dark grey with "Marié Digby Breathing Underwater" on the front and the tour stops listed on the back. They were also selling a small totebag and the Breathing Underwater CD.

I hope many of you are able to see Marié on the tour!

great write up! i gave a shout out to the digbyholics when i met with marié last night ;) hehe. she praised you guys for all your updates! love it! the show was above and beyond what i expected, after all the youtube videos of her shows i've watched, it's just soooooo much better live! :) hope the rest of the digbyholic gang can make it out to a show! keep the updates coming!

ALSO! i did ask her a couple of questions...

her movie: suppose to debut out in snippets/sections over the weeks with the first coming out next week (i think). i didn't ask how it was going to be released, but probably through youtube or itunes? no idea.

the 'untitled' song she played in her september 7th webchat with the REALLY PRETTY chords..she said she got kind of stuck, so hopefully she'll be able to develop it along the tour!

yup! i'll make sure to send a few pictures to vince. and there's also someone uploading video of last night's show: youtube.com/emisymphony

thanks digbyholics!
